Masuku wa furīsōru-マスクはFREE SOUL

LA MASCHERA LIBERA L’ANIMA

THE MASK FREE THE SOUL

 Genova

The book of "Ollomont" especially the first appeared in Japan newspapers in a reduced format, aroused curiosity and interest, from the people of that nation,  eager to visit "Genoa."

Since very early "the romance" it will also be presented with the other part of Ollomont tales from other Asian nation’s magazines, including: China and Thailand etc. and this other Asians country citizens, will want to visit and see the places where there was the young life experience of the two boys "Maco and Zo".

So, we like to introduce to our friends and other Asian nationalities the treasures of this historic city.

Our commitment is not to tell all about Genoa, because we would not have the  time or space, but to offer a useful guide, informative and to present an unknown city “full of charm and mystery”.

I would especially like to specify that the places where the events took place of "Ollomont" have changed into decades, following the described period, about "1958" and so it would be impossible to find the same scenario but "Via del Peralto and Via Giovanni Costanzo" the avenue where the boys did the footing game, remained much the same, more cured, of course to conserve  the " Maco and Zo" memory.

As written at the end of the fifth book of "Ollomont ", there is a legend about the avenue of Via del Peralto.

"when two people who love each other, as they kiss in the avenue, and if they hear the gallop of a horse, means that their love, will be a great love. "

As in “Marcello” dream’s, the mysterious knight saves "Maco" from the beast that wants to stop him kissing his ideal girl.

Today to reach those places there are various means of transport, as the  N°. 40     or 640 bus should arrive (at the time we are writing) near the beginning of the beautiful lined-tree street.

And if our friends from Asia or other continents, they had the time and desire         to visit other places and / or characteristic of Genova we could offer other with pleasure, news about the city.

We will explain about the city, that the real pride of the city it seems strange: a place of burial.

There is no more beautiful cemetery in the world, as is been considered an "open air museum". In fact, it has a double meaning aesthetic-artistic and historical.         It was declared a "National monument." Remarkable is the architectural layout and excellent sculpture.

It was destination of illustrious visitors like Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain

Impossible to list the number of historical figures: heroes, writers, poets, painters, composers up to the most recent: the singer-songwriter Fabrizio De Andrè and Emanuele Luzzati (scenographer, animator and illustrator).

Fabrizio De Andrè

However, we like to let to the visitor the pleasure of discovery, but we cannot mention the tomb of "Oscar Wilde's wife", (Mary Constance Llyd).

Mary Constance Llyd

The most important place, for Genoese people, enthusiasts of Genoese dialect theater is the tomb of "Gilberto Govi", remained the formidable character in the hearts of his countrymen with his wife "Rina Gaioni" life companion and on stage.

Tomb of Gilberto Govi and Rina Gaioni

Genova in Italian, "Zena" in dialect  and "Genua" in Latin, is nicknamed "the Proud"or the "Dominant" of the seas "the Republic" of the Magnificent.

Responsible for the first adjective is the poet Francesco Petrarca "You'll see a   royal city leans against an alpine hill, superb for men and walls, whose only appearance indicates the Lady of the Sea" (1358).

Coming from the sea in the evening, will see the illuminated city as is bathed in the light of the lantern

It is a credit to his children among them are: Christoforo Colombo, Giuseppe Mazzini, Goffredo Mameli.

Today, the SuperbProud” continues to look to the sea and gets back into the game by reopening and redeveloping the Porto Antico area by dressing the magic of the largest aquarium in Europe, thanks to the clever architect creativity, il Genovese DOC: Renzo Piano.

In this mosaic is another element is added: the new tank Dolphins. A modern "Aquarium" internally built at sea. http://www.acquariodigenova.it

Also at the wharf Morosini it is moored the Galleon Neptune, the set of the   "Pirates" film by Roman Polanski.

All together with the "Children's City", the skating rink (ice skating), outdoor games, the "Luzzati" Museum and the Library "De Amicis" - dedicated to children's  literature under the big arms of the "Bigo" (rotating lift that rises up to 40 m. in height allowing a 360 °) and in front of the "Biosphere" (small tech bubble, which  encloses a micro-ecosystem river) Aquarius is Europe's largest exhibition of   aquatic biodiversity.

Noteworthy is the "Galata Museo del Mare", located in the old arsenal, dedicated   to the various maritime activities and the history of navigation. http://galatamuseodelmare.it  and the "National Museum of Antarctica" http://www.mna.it  And if you want to try another emotion you cannot miss: "Dialogue in the Dark", where experienced guides, blind guides, they will take you on a multisensory, interactive exhibition. It is on board of the "Fincantieri barge", moored in marina in front of the Galata. http://www.acquariovillage.it

And if you want to see Genoa from the sea there is a boat tour, "Villa to Villa tour" starting from the Aquarium will allow you to see from a privileged perspective a breathtaking view. Start from the "old port of Pegli", crossing the whole Ligurian Riviera with exceptional guides or with musical accompaniment by the  Conservatory ” Nicolò Paganini”. Recommended and I would say “must be  booked”, to avoid unnecessary queues: call 0185- 772 091 or 010 265 712

Overview of the city from the air

Going up we find on our right the oldest Cathedral of St. Lorenzo, the  Romanesque style (built between 1100 and the XIV sec.) And arrive to the Ducal Palace, residence of the Doges from 1339, now a magnificent Genoese culture as  a forum for exhibitions and expositions: info and bookings: 010-9868057- http://www.palazzoducale.genova.it

Opposite the Palace is the large Piazza De Ferrari, the center of the bubbling fountain scenic.

The whole area, which is the heart of the city, has been restored and redeveloped in 2001 by architect Bernhard Winkler project.

On the side of the mountain we find the Academy of Fine Arts e Linguistics Palace, and the il Teatro dell’opera Carlo Felice, perfect for an unforgettable cultural evening.

Outside of the "Teatro dell’opera Carlo Felice "

The beautiful interior of the Opera House "Carlo Felice"

The theater was destroyed in the World War II, for 45 years it remained an open wound, only in 1991 was returned to the city. It’s a curious double-sided structure, dominated by a tower that contains the stage machinery. But the most sensational part is the internal one, because it reproduces the atmosphere of the typical Genoese square with the caratteristic “balconetti”, viable and stones, all under a star studded sky. Scenic structures are among the most worldwide advanced. In front of the facade, with its classical portico (spared by the bombings), it stands, alters, the equestrian statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi.)

For music connoisseurs, one must remember "Niccolo Paganini", virtuoso violinist and composer of international renown. As for jazz enthusiasts there is the "G.Dagnino" Museum.

Genova and its Cinema

The ratio of Genoa with the movies has always been somewhat controversial.

Despite the region climate, which is well suited to the film needs, it has not developed any of nationwide productivity manufacturing activity.

There are no film studios but only industrial and educational video producers.

This state of affairs has sharpened the wits of the Genoese.

A striking incident was the film: "Achtung! Bandits!" (1951) directed by Carlo  Lizzani starring Gina Lollobrigida and Andrea Checchi.

The production, which had no money, turned to the people of Genoa creating a cooperative between filmmakers and viewers. They were collected the necessary money through subscriptions in the popular neighborhoods and factories.

Thus he was born the film that was to celebrate the victory of the partisans on fascism. I think this is a unique case in the world. The film was a triumph, and   even today is considered a classic. But the true cinematic myth is "The Walls of Malapaga", directed in 1949 by Rene Clement, with Jean Gabin and Isa Miranda.

A French noir set in "Caruggi" of Molo and in the Ghetto.

The film won the Academy Award for best foreign film.

Directors and actors are always Ligurian emigrants in Rome and have never  spoken too good of their town.

But some exception, as Rocco Cesareo, film director. Born in Genoa author of important works among which excels: "The Borsellino Angels", dedicated to the bodyguard, men and women who have accompanied him on his last journey. On the "The Borsellino Angels "  page is told the story about this masterpiece of   Rocco Cesareo.

"The movie poster for the Angels Borsellino"

It is not uncommon to find roads blocked in the Genovese city because someone   is shooting a movie, see the crew engaged to work and the curious who gather at the barrier. An impressive number of documentaries have been filmed for many European televisions, Genoa as a city of art but also the city in the days of the G8 mention also in “Ollomont 5”.

Very soon, we hope, to see the first take of Italian or Japanese in Genoa with the    "Zuan”  films of the "Ollomont" saga.

Which are the most used Genoese location? The renewed Piazza De Ferrari (named in Ollomont) leads the list, followed by the Old Port, the Aquarium, Via Garibaldi (both indoor and outdoor) but also from the more traditional docks of the port, as Calata Gadda pier and Calata Boccardo pier.

The crews are at home on the beautiful esplanade of Castelletto, Boccadasse and the streets of the Righi hills and the possible new location of Via Del Peralto.

Entertainment in Genoa

In addition to the Carlo Felice opera house and theater, where you can admire the most beautiful works or the concerts, while for young people there are beautiful discos.

Or if you want a more cultural and lively evening we suggest you spend a secret evening with "The Young Singers of Sant'Olcese" directed by Maestro Paolo Besagno.

A magnificent entertainment, recommended for those visiting Genoa. It is a style    of singing of most distinctive voices of the "Genoese" one only style solely "Ligure" a form of singing "polyphonic" for five voices.
The rich rhythmic and melodic tissue, due to this "
polyphony and polyrhythm" is the hallmark of this particular musical style.
The tradition want, the singers, in a circle to sing, usually in dialect "
Genovese"   the singers do not use tools because with the exception of the most beautiful instrument "from the creation of man": their voices are the tools.  Tenor, Bass,  Solo, Guitar, Controbasso, and Controalto. They are mostly all male voices. The number of singers varies from a minimum of seven and maximum of fifteen and voices are all male.

And typical of Liguria, an exciting journey back in time. To be present at their concerts, it means to be part of the musical universe.

You will be very thrilling to hear the voice of Leonardo Marti this talented 14 y.o. (See Young Artists page)

The "I Giovani canterini di Sant'Olcese" are available for concerts, themed events, parties, conferences and for any activities concerning the dissemination of "trallalero".

"It will be for the basil growing in Ligurian hinterland or to the fabulous "Trenette with pesto", that the Ligurian always manage to offer something more to the rest    of the world".

The historic center of Genoa

You can fully enjoy strolling through the typical "carruggi” (alleyways).
Its a fantasy world that keeps its treasures in one "box".

The lure is irresistible!

The route is complicated enough to seem like a "labyrinth", for this we invite you    to follow us to go and look around, we climb the narrow streets and we venture into the most fascinating and hidden part of the city where the styles overlap and the past acts as foundations to the present.

On the sides are the tower-houses, so close they almost touching each other and looking up we see the steps that once served as a liaison and defense.

The space is so small, that "the sun of the good Lord does not give his rays " (De Andrè), then suddenly the light and unexpectedly, the road widens, a small  square, where you can breathe the scent of the cake just baked.

Some areas are unfortunately poorly attended, so it is prudent to follow during the visit to the restored area without advancing too much in the paths less safe.

Along these streets and squares meet real jewels of art and craft, not to forget its historical shops, in the past they have imposed the names to the districts. Type: Vico degli Orefici, Vico Indoratori, Salita Pollaioli, Macelli di Soziglia, Piazza Pellicceria etc.etc.

Note: The name "caruggi (alleyways)" could come from the checked baggage of businessmen or armies, formed in this case by “carri" “chariots", or by a large tank used to transport goods.

Lovers of history and architecture will find in the palaces of the "Rolli" a rich  itinerary of the visit, in the heart of the city, a 42-building system, which UNESCO declared World Heritage.

The "Rolli", are beautiful buildings built in Renaissance and Baroque period, once the residence of the Genoese families in high places.

They are called "Rolli", from (rollo, ie: paper roll), because in the past they were used in special civil service: in 1576, in fact, at the result of a census, the most prestigious residences were entered in special registers and to house famous travelers during state visits. The owners were therefore obliged to accommodate powerful characters on a visit to the Republic and to bear the costs of representation related to their stay.

The owners were therefore obliged to accommodate powerful  characters on a visit to the Republic and to bear the costs of representation related to their stay.

To give each family a foreign belonging to one of three categories to be accepted, was added to the roll of a dice to be chosen by lot, as in lottery games.

Possible guests in categories ranging from "Papa Imperatore Re, Legato    Cardinale , Principe up to  Ambassador to the Nunzio Pontificio, etc.", It could also be mere noble or great merchants and artists.

Speaking of artists, in the summer of 1607 in the wake of the "Duke Vincenzo", that was in the city for sea bathing, came the great "Pier Paul Rubens" and had the opportunity to appreciate the villas and palaces; thus he created in the mind a kind of ideal partnership with the homeland: the city of Antwerp.

With the taste of experience collector, who directs him to produce a homogeneous collection of reliefs and drawings.

In the introduction of the book, published in 1622, "Rubens" declared: "To do a meritorious work to the people of all the overseas provinces." Recipient of the  Book, "Palace Genoese, Don Carlo Grimaldi" man of letters and science,   grandson of "Gio Battista Grimaldi" founder of the "Meridiana palace" and the "Fortress."

The first volume was published at his own expense, and the buildings were  entered under the letters A to K, only two buildings have an indication of the  owners (Palazzo Tursi and Pallavicino-Cambiaso), while the second edition appeared in all other numerical sequence, with the name of the owners.

In this first volume of 1626, it was associated with a letter, written by the "Rubens" to "Pieter Van Veen" in Antwerp (67 tables); appendix also presents the four  famous churches drawings: "S. Maria di Carignano", "San Siro-S.Ambrogio", "Holy Trinity of Vastato" the Meursio? And in 1652 they are presented for two different  title pages: "Ancient Palaces" and " Modern Palaces "; in addition to the villas: "Fortress" Grimaldi, Spinola, Albaro, Cambiaso and two eastern suburbs. It’s important to remember the work of detection of the architectural and cultural complex of "New Road", because it was decided to continue the experience that began as "Rubens" since 2006 by completing the translation of his work and that  of his successors.

Tourists can, on occasion, also visit the unrecognized part of the buildings: the atria, external and roof gardens and sumptuous interiors, rich in works of art of immense value.

We must also make a mention, even to the work of another artist, assistant and collaborator of Rubens, who visited Italy, especially Genoa in 1621, where he lived for four years and generates most of his works, becoming the official painter and portraitist of Genoese oligarchy, with whom he finds a way to highlight their power and pomp of a unforgettable Genoa

He returned to Antwerp in 1628, his hometown, to became the official painter of the King, dying only 42 years in 1641 in London. Deserve mention portraits of Ansaldo Pallavicino (Spinola), Paolina Adorno Brignole Sale (Red Palace), Anton Giulio Brignole Sale (Rosso), Caterina Balbi Durazzo (Royal Palace), Brigida Spinola  Doria and Admiral Andrea Doria.Reservations - tel.010 -2758098 museistradanuova@comune.it

The characters of the golden age of the Republic of Genoa, not existing then the photography, they may come to us thanks to the masterful brushstrokes, of this great artist who knew how to masterfully depict the magnificence of Genoa.

His talent is evident not only in the ability to reproduce the physiognomic but especially in the accurate representation of precious clothes (perhaps congenial    to him for that he comes from a wealthy bourgeois family, who traded in silk and fine fabrics).

This match between Genoa and Antwerp is not accidental, since it is already in    the past entertained commercial relations with the Flanders and recently on the occasion of the "Festival of Science", which takes place every year; there was an interesting conference, with the presence of experts from various fields.

And 'the story of two cities, but different where the splendor comes from the water, from the passions and traditions, by the great Flemish talent above all still connected by tourism and the desire for constant renewal.

Boccadasse "boca d'aze" or "bocadaze", in dialet Genovese, from doubtful  meaning or "donkey's mouth" or deriving from the stream name "asse", which   once flowed, after supplying the fountain washing "treuggi".

The village, with its characteristic houses from pastels leaning against each other and wrapped around a small bay, has remained almost unchanged over time.

And one of the most spectacular destinations, so alive and vital, as to bring us back to the past with fishermen intent to fix the nets and redecorating their multicolored boats, behind which one has the impression of seeing materialize the "cat" of the song that "Gino Paoli" dedicated to "Boccadasse".

Going up to "St. Antonio Church ", we are in the overlying promenade Corso Italia, attacked to the “Lido” and where are its famous ice cream shops where there is a whole varied selection of tastes. Couples hand in hand, mothers with prams and young whizzing kid on skids Rollerskater ... ect.) Always and especially on summer evenings, to watch the sea and enjoy:

"That thick air strong of salt, bulk of salt and smells of sea ." (F. D'Andrè)

Sporting Genoa

For sports lovers, Genova boasts the origin of the World Soccer game. The oldest town club team is the "Genoa" was born on September 7, 1893/96, which has the privilege of being the first Italian team of the football world.

Since 1901, after the death of Queen Victoria, they were adopted the colors of the Union Jack, the flag of the United Kingdom. The integrated symbol in the emblem is the “Grifone” (Griffin: heraldic figure formed from the intersection of an eagle, a lion and a horse), also present in the coat of arms of the city.

Coat of arms of Genoa Football Club emblem

But there, too, another local rival: the "Sampdoria”, formed by the merger of two clubs, Sampierdarenese and Doria, united in 1946/47"

Sampdoria Football club emblem

The antagonism between the two teams is extreme especially when they face in the "derby of Lanterna”, these "Pròtheroi theoi-titanisti", at home, at the Marassi stadium in the Bisagno River area, the fans turn on and from windows and balconies, show-off, flags and banners, which highlight the belonging to one or other team, the city then becomes coloring the districts of a picturesque and folckloristic chromaticism. At one time the sport was more civilized, was rejoiced at the victory or accepted defeat with aplomb, almost Anglo-Saxon. It seems that the first formations were made up by an Englishman: "Genoa cricket club football."

Taste and Flavors

The "Journey" continues through the taste, the flavors and smells of good food.

An interesting route, especially useful, when fatigue will have the upper hand, the "alleyways" of the shops with their scented wake, will have tickled your taste buds and your stomach so near to the heart.

Then it's time to search the options and Genova boasts a lot of great restaurants (for traditional Genovese we suggest the Trattorie "Taverns") in Genoa all trattorie offer excellent dishes. The traditional dish of the Genovese city are the "trenette or bavette (small noodles) with pesto sauce ". Dish made with basil, is considered a vegetarian dish.

The Ligurian cuisine reflects the sincere and genuine character of an essential  area, given its location between the mountains and the sea but rich in resources and worthy of consideration.

The "sailors" dishes, the simple recipes every day, seafood (that fishermen sell fresh even today, in the morning, in the dock), the bass fish, the flavor of the anchovies, the characteristic scent of squid, the delicacy of mussels, flavors masterfully enhanced by the skilful addition of essential ingredients and historically "poor" such as tomato, garlic, parsley and a little olive oil extra virgin.

The Minestrone Genovese is made when added some pesto, without pine nuts,  and only when the fire is off)

Minestrone alla Genovese

As we cannot forget the pies: "Torta Pasqualina", the "focaccia" (simple, sage, rosemary, oregano, onion, with olives, with slices of fresh tomato, anchovy, etc.) There's even one with Nutella for dipping at breakfast in the cappuccino.   "Focaccia col formaggio" (typical and unique usually is made from the lovely    small town of Recco, outside Genoa, along the Via Aurelia, on the Eastern Riviera.

But let us now explain the various main dish: The "Top" (one of the most popular dishes of the Ligurian cuisine). The "Accommodated stockfish ", one of the most imaginative local cuisine (in Genoa is said "stocche"). The "Thin Cappon" it is the dish that most of all explains the art of recycling in the kitchen, as a poor dish has become the most refined and expensive preparations for great restaurants tables. The "Tripe" (the sauce, green, moist, etc ... the more good if there is the "Gola." The "Bollito "(mixed meat in broth, even better if accompanied by the exclusive" green sauce ", with parsley, garlic, etc.)

Cima alla Genovese

 Bollito misto

And for dessert "Pandolce" (typical cake stuffed with pine nuts, raisins, and other choice ingredients, typical of the Christmas holidays, but you can also eat any time you liker).

Panettone Genovese

And to keep your throat cool: The “Ice Cream” of any kind made freshly exclusively from the typical “Genovese Ice Cream shop”. Cups with varied tastes, “affogati with the cafè”, with berries, etc. After the meal, we must mention the "caffè" (proposed coffee in different variations, but with the unmistakable fragrance and flavor); then there is a wide choice of bitters, which are also called "ammazzacaffè"(coffee killer).

It's important to remember the importance of the wines: red, pink or white, Liguria produces from the characteristic vineyards, the typical bands overhanging the sea, the most famous ones of the "Cinque Terre", but also others who definitely are the experts " barmen or wines waiters "will advise, to accompany the dishes of your choice with dignity. VIRGIN OLIVE OIL OF LIGURIA

We cannot, not to mention the palatability of the Ligurian oil, one of the best this comes precisely from Liguria in the municipality of "Mezzanego" where an inner moist soil and at the same time kissed by the sun and the breeze coming from the "Ligurian Sea" awards from Divine virtues needed to sustain olive trees.

Thanks to this particular “natural” mixture the Ligurian olive trees offer a higher quality of olives and therefore a precious olive oil.

The first pressing olive oil (extra virgin) is very digestible, so that today the young people in the early morning they take a tablespoon of “virgin olive oil” to keep them active throughout the day.

In Liguria there are many mills, but one in particular is in the "Borgonovo Ligure" is called "Oil Mill". It is one of the few that sells through the website and because the product is canned, the shipping is safe and can be send worldwide.

Genova is an exciting and unmissable destination.

Our illustrated - presentation, did not want to be a comprehensive guide to the city that of the rest speaks for itself, but a help to choose things that would be appropriate to see.

Not only the great museums or prestigious Porto Antico area with the Aquarium  and the whole outline of attractions, but the visit to Genoa secluded as erroneously considered minor, which still retains its mysteries.

Our intention was rather to accompany you on a journey back in time, to let you know a different way to draw close to the city, to his daily life, made of small and big stories, faces and characters, with their habits, customs and traditions.

We wanted to captivate you with the suggestion of a "marvel" to be discovered: intrigues and passions, "secrets and love affairs", which emerge not only from the legends of old Genoa, the "old town", but also the nobility of past glories, lived at the Palazzi dei Rolli.

Usually tourists are grouped into guided tours, taste paralysis and discovery,  where you see everything and nothing, without experiencing the city, without knowing its people, a strange humanity, frank, apparently a little rough, tough (deemed by "grumbling", easy to complain) but big-hearted, friendly and above all sincere.

The visits that we propose offer always different and original ideas that gradually make up a colorful affresco.

Admire the past means building a better tomorrow.

Man does not need only material to live, but requires excitement and satisfaction that knowledge and art can give. The admiration for the treasures that a city contains satisfies the aesthetic taste, especially if unable to power the imagination. Singers - poets, they were able with their songs touch the deepest chords of each of us, even those who are moved only to hear, without understanding the dialect. Consider, for example, Gino Paoli, Bruno Lauzi in "Genova per noi" and the unforgettable Fabrizio D'Andre in "Creuza de mä"( Included in Ollomont part 4). Liguria simple, is their old fishermen and, their strenuous lives, governed by the whims of the sea and wind.

At this point, for our part we can only wish you a great stay in Genoa, especially if you have the opportunity to carve out the time to make a peaceful visit, hoping to  be were helpful and always available for any further information and updates.
